Sunday morning

Good morning all well here we are at the end of July where does the time go? I got out yesterday and did a mega shop so we are stuffed with food not that it will last that long with hungry men around. We were also low on the house cleaning stuff  like soap powder, polish, tooth paste and toilet rolls really exciting stuff to buy.  I spent the day teetering between anger and and upset following our session with the psychologist.  I wonder if they realise how much damage they do in the name of help.  When I discussed it with Mike he could hardly remember what had been said sometimes deafness and short term memory loss is a positive advantage.
I waited in hope of rain which never came so the plants are looking very sorry for themselves and today I really must get out and water.  I believe we are due for rain on Tuesday which is too far down the line for the pots to last.  How come the weeds are so drought tolerant?
I made a huge stir-fry with egg fried rice and the little chicken skew…

Saturday Morning

Good morning all it is dull and overcast this morning and yesterday we had the wrong kind of rain! It was just enough to wet the washing but not enough to water the garden.  We really could use a good few hours of steady rain in the mean time I will trundle around with the hosepipe.
We had our feed back session from the psychologist who is only just in long trousers and after his session of 30 minutes with each of us he has decided that our relationship is completely broken and we should get a divorce.  The boy is a fool and has no idea exactly what that would entail.  How pray do you divorce a bedridden deaf old man and not be the biggest bitch in Christendom I promised to look after him and I will.   Presumable the wedding vows mean nothing [in sickness and in health] yes it is tough but we have been through so much now is not the time to throw in the towel.  Beside the only winners in a divorce are the lawyers.  Anyway, we are now off his books unless there is a re-referral which …

Friday morning

Good morning all and a lovely sunny one it is.  We did have some rain yesterday but not enough to do any real good.  It was not until I was on my way home from Shiona's that the rain started and what a surprise I had the windscreen wipers just switched themselves on what a neat trick.  I also noticed that as you drive into heavily shaded areas the dash board lights also just come on.  How exciting it is and interesting that such little things are so pleasing.
I still heard nothing about the coffee machine and I am coming to the conclusion that the money I saved on the car would be better spent on replacing the coffee machine as it is so heavily used.  As it is the main brew unit that is bust I expect the repair price will be huge so I think I will cut my losses and get another machine.
The dogs are both exhausted after spending the day charging around Shiona's big garden one of her Westies has decided that my dogs need to be chased off the premises but his little legs are…

If only we had smelly vision both the lilies and the rose have the most incredible scent.  The rose arrived yesterday already in bloom.  It was advertised as being heavily scented and boy they weren't joking it has the most incredible scent.  Despite being dull and overcast yesterday we had  one miserable shower not enough to do any good but the forecast is looking like we are due for some rain in the coming days.  Most of the garden plants are well enough established to weather a bit of drought but the new stuff and stuff in pots need constant watering so I will be pleased not to have to do that for a few days.
Sorry about you sheets Joy they would have dried beautifully here.  I have been doing a lot of washing while the weather is in our favour.  Today I am off to Shiona's for lunch so first I have to make sure there is something for the men to eat while I am out.  I have some of the Aldi bassa fillets in the freezer which are nice and easy to cook and the fridge is stuffe…

Wednesday morning

Good morning all this morning it is cool and cloudy and looking a lot like rain which would be most welcome here.  Yet again I am waiting for a call for the repair company and I never know what is a reasonable time to allow them before they contact you.  I know that for me it feels like ages but it has only been a couple of days so I will hang on until next week then I will start searching for someone else to come and repair the coffee machine.  I have a shrewd idea that it is going to be horribly expensive to mend as it is the main brew unit that has broken in which case I might do better looking at replacing the machine.  It takes a lot of use with four adult coffee drinkers in the house so it needs to be as strong as a commercial coffee machine.
Yesterday was a nice quiet day Denny did her stuff and the house is nice and clean I have a mountain of ironing to do but as it is nice and cool today would be a good day to get that done.  My trip to the dentist was uneventful and nothi…

Tuesday morning

Good morning all it looks like another lovely day with temperatures I can cope with.  We have been dry for ages but I believe rain is on the way.  Let's hope it rains at night and we still have lovely days. There has been no news about the coffee machine so we are making do with the Tassimo which is certainly better than instant.
I went to the bank yesterday and explained what I had heard and was assured that they don't freeze joint accounts if one party dies.  They simply remove that person once they have the death certificate so that is one nightmare sorted.  I am trying hard not to leave a mess behind me it really is the last thing relatives want at what is already a difficult time.  Shiona was left in a mess when her husband died without making any provisions for her.  He had taken out various life insurance policies which she knew nothing about until they sent letters asking for payment of the premium.  Fortunately she has her head screwed on and managed to sort out th…

Monday morning

Good morning all we have a bit of a cloudy sky this morning but plenty of bright sunshine too.  It is a comfortable 19 degrees and the nights have been a bit cooler thank heavens.  The gazpacho went down well for lunch and for supper we had some sticky chicken wings with a large salad and some creamed mushrooms.  The mushrooms didn't really fit the menu but they needed eating.  I left a portion available for Denzil when he came home but I see it is still there so I guess it will be my lunch for today. Left overs like this are a bit of a nuisance as it kind of mucks up todays menu.  Not that I had anything exotic planned.
I noticed that some of my little plants have keeled over, that hot spell was just too much for them, but the majority have survived so that is OK but we really could use some rain.  I have placed an order for a pot grown rose to fill in the big gap so that will need looking after for the summer while it establishes.   However I am trying not to give myself too …

Sunday morning

Good morning all another bright sunny start to the day still no rain and the garden is getting desperate. According to the weather forecast it might not rain until Wednesday so I will be on watering duty.  James is out with the dogs and as yet I haven't brought my mind to bear on the lunch issue.  I went and did a bit of shopping yesterday as there are some items I cannot get at Aldi I then make a pilgrimage to Tesco.  We are all particularly fond of their pink grapefruit squash because it isn't very sweet.  I tend to buy 6 bottles at a time so it lasts for while but with 4 of us drinking it and the weather so hot we are going through it at a rate of knots.
The boys took the dogs out yesterday afternoon as the tide was in and they could have a nice swimming session.  Dan still looks skinny but he is building some serious muscles and really does plough through the water.  The new dog box is ideal as it it is easily wiped out if it gets very wet and the dogs have accepted it ve…

Saturday morning

Good morning all nice and cool this morning down to 18 degrees and very pleasant.  Still no rain so I am on watering duty.  I rang another repair company about the coffee machine and guess what I now have to wait for them to ring me.  In the mean time the Tassimo machine has been called back into service so I have a nice cappuccino sitting on the desk.  Good job it is now at home not in the caravan at least it makes a good standby.
I have been feeling pretty grotty for the last couple of days I think the heat and the very high pollen count has got to me as I am very breathless and have had banging headaches which may be due to caffeine deprivation.  I walked up to the shops yesterday and made really heavy weather of it, my legs felt like they were made of lead.  I am hoping that a good down pour will lay the pollen and that might see me improve if not then I must make an appointment to see the quack.  If you remember I had this happen to me in the caravan when I was exposed to huge…

Friday morning

At last the heat has died down and last night was tolerably cool for sleeping.  The last few nights have been unbearably hot and sticky.
Still nothing from the coffee machine engineer so I will try another company and see if I have more success.  I finally got the nets done yesterday, I am not a lover of net curtains but they are definitely easier to clean than venetian blinds.
I spent some time in the kitchen yesterday and made a pepper stew some creamed spinach and we had the sausages for lunch and a nice potato salad I made using up the excess of potatoes.  I have the ingredients for a large bowl of coleslaw which we will have with some boiled ham for lunch.  The ham has been soaking over night so I hope it will not be too salty and I can make some soup with the boiling stock.
The sky looks very overcast but we are not forecast rain however I would be pleased to see some rain for the garden and to lay the pollen which is very high at the moment and is making us all a bit snuffly.

Thursday Morning

Good morning all well yesterday was a day of two halves in the morning it was windy so we opened up all the windows the found we were getting loads of debris from the garden in the house.  Then the wind dropped and back came the heat.  This morning is a much cooler start and I am hoping the real heat will have dissipated.
Disaster has struck, my repair of the coffee machine proved to be temporary and now it is very dead so I am reduced to drinking tea.  I have contacted an engineer but as yet have not heard back from him.
Mark, my old gardener, came and measured up the chicken run for a make over and just as well he did as I had to ask him to give me a hand getting Mike off the floor.  He had been using his bed table as a foot rest then managed to kick the whole thing over and roll off the bed onto the floor. No damage was done and we put Mike back up on his bed and I reassembled the bed table.  This has illustrated one thing to me and that is I cannot pick Mike up by myself.  He w…

Wednesday morning

Good morning all, well what a day yesterday was, the only time I was comfortable was when driving in an air-conditioned car.  The rest of the time I was like a limp lettuce leaf and last night was the night from hell my bed was awash in sweat and I have woken with a banging head.  I think the problem for us Brits is that we don't get any time to acclimatise one minute you need a coat and the next day you need a bikini.  At the moment it is 23.8 degrees in the garden as I have just been out with the hose watering the plants which managed to survive yesterdays inferno.
I had a lovely breakfast with Sandy and bought some tit bits for lunch, a nice fresh pecorino cheese and also a goats milk gorgonzola along with some nice slices of mortadella crusty bread and some salad bits.  The only problem is that having eaten breakfast the last thing on my mind was lunch but the men really enjoyed it. By the time we got to supper none of us felt much like cooking so it was a takeaway chicken  s…

Tuesday Morning

Good morning all what a hot and sticky night following a boiling hot day.  I believe today is due to be even hotter it is too hot for me.  I think we find it difficult because we have no chance to acclimatise to the temperature as it can jump from 14 degrees to 34 in one day.  Anyway the windows have been open over night to cool the house down and now is the time to slam everything shut and drop the blinds before the sun can turn it into an oven.
I had a bit of a set to with the ladies from social services who insisted on coming to see us.  I ushered them into Mike but they wanted to speak to me first.  Fine, so I gave it to them in a very direct fashion I wasn't rude or aggressive but they just don't seem to get the idea that Mike does what he wants regardless and there is nothing in their armoury to offer us that might help because everything requires the cooperation of the patient.  There is no point in offering a day care centre if he refuses to go. Been there done that. …

Good morning all well I guess summer is really here the temperatures are rising and by Wednesday they are due to be unbearable so now is the time to put my magic blinds to the test they certainly kept the heat in in the winter now lets see if they keep the heat out in the summer. Today I am going to ring up and find out about doing the chicken run and see what sort of price they want to do the job.  I have some fake lawn left and I was wondering if it might not look nice as a chequer board pattern with insets of fake grass.
The dogs have just come back from their walk which is nice and early so it is not to hot but they still need 20 minutes or so cool down before they have breakfast.
What an indelicate way to sit but it keeps the parts cool
I had a good shop in Aldi yesterday and decided to make saltinbocca alla romana which we had with some potato gnocchi, so simple but oh so tasty.  Today with the heat in mind I intend a cold meat salad for lunch and possibly a pasty for supper …

Sunday Morning

Good morning all, I had a lovely day yesterday sitting in Shiona's garden watching the dogs have fun. Dan successfully rolled in some fox poo in the first 5 minutes so he got a going over with the hose  and after that he steered well clear of it. After lunch we watched a film with Billy Connolly called "what we did on our holidays", very funny and well worth a watch. That was just the tonic I needed so by about 7pm it was decided that we would come home and let Shiona get on with her preparations for her trip to Scotland.  What I actually needed was a bit of female company not a change of scenery.  What I really don't need is time to think as I can soon think myself into a black hole.  By the time we got home the dogs were ready for their supper and yes I forgot to take their food with me - was this a freudian slip? I was poleaxed with tiredness having just had 3 hours sleep so I too was ready for my bed and I was unconscious by 9pm and didn't wake until 5am.  I…

Saturday Morning

Good morning all, well at last my hair is manageable and I am no longer a shaggy pony.  Needles to say while I was at the hairdresser the occupational health people were on the phone wanting to come and assess Mike AGAIN.  James answered the phone and queried why we have to go through this all again and what exactly was they outcome they were hoping to achieve.  This went down like a lead balloon and the OT got quite stroppy with him.  So on my return I phoned and she got stroppy with me too anyway to cut a long story short we are being invaded by a psychologist, a psychiatric nurse and two OT's on Wednesday lunch time.  It is Denzil's birthday so I though we could have a party; should I lay on a buffet lunch?  I am furious not only do I have to leave my home to save my sanity but then I have to put up with the piccadilly circus that is our home. As you are well aware this has been going on for ages with no palpable results, they come, take copious notes, which no one ever re…

The dogs have been swimming
Tubby looks dry and Dan is sopping wet but they have had a brilliant time.  It is so nice to see them really having fun and apart from meals they were happy to snooze in the sun for the rest of the day. Swimming really take it out of them and they reckon that 20 minutes swimming is as good as an hours walking and it is still the only thing that Dan can beat Tubby at, and so he should considering the size of his paddles.  They did rather well at lunch time as Mike couldn't manage his steak even though I had sliced it finely to make it easy to eat.  Supper was more to his taste - beans on toast and a fried egg.
I am hopeful that the cage for the car will arrive today and Denzil is a day off so he can man the front door while I am at the HAIRDRESSER.  I also have to go to the chemist to pick up a prescription so I will no doubt pick up something for lunch while I am out.
I woke this morning to beautiful sunshine and a clear blue sky but I was feeling disg…

Thursday Morning

Good morning all, first I must thank the anonymous flower donor who sent me flowers via moonpig. The card that came with the flowers was blank so I have no idea who to thank.
Yesterday I got the bit between my teeth and organised a person to come and do the power of attorney documentation for Mike.  As luck would have it they are just up the road and came immediately all is now done but it takes 8-10 weeks for the registration to happen.  I needed to get Denzil's signature witnessed when he came home from work so we are both on the paper work and while I was chatting with the person witnessing he regaled us with a story of how his father in law had gone completely cuckoo in just one week by which time of course it is too late.  I am very clued up on just how difficult things are when you are trying to deal with a loved ones affairs in an emergency as I had no end of trouble when James was ill. So it is nothing to do with age it just gives someone you trust the right to handle you…

Wednesday morning

Good morning all, well I wont need to do any watering as is it hosing down with rain.  Yesterday was a bit of a wash out the social services people rang to say they would not be coming after all and they could offer nothing but someone to come in and run a flannel over Mikes face which is not the issue apparently he doesn't meet the criteria for respite care.  So no help to be had there.  A very nice lady did come out to do an assessment on me as a carer and it didn't take her 5 minutes to see what the problem was.  She immediately twigged that Mike is jealous of James and the fact that I have to split my attention so he is behaving like a 5year old.  Cutting a very long story short she advised me to go away and take James with me for a weekend and leave Mike to cope.  Denzil will be in and out as he works the weekend.  So I immediately rang Shiona and asked for sanctuary she has the room for both of us and the dogs and as luck would have it she is off to Scotland for a week …

Tuesday morning

Good morning all well yesterday was the day of phone calls to social services I threw a real wobbly on the phone and today the big wigs are coming to assess the situation so far they have taken enough notes to write a novel but that is no help to man nor beast.  I am going to push for some respite care so I can have some time off duty.  Sadly it takes something dramatic to move social services as all the time they think they can pat you on the head you will carry on doing everything.  So now I have joined the ranks of the vocal minority and kicked up merry hell.  It is embarrassing to have to go to extremes but all the time you ask nicely nothing happens.
Well enough of this nonsense the sun is shining there is a cloudless blue sky Denny is here doing her thing despite the chaos.  We emptied  the old car of all the crud and it is now liberally scattered all over the dining room and I still haven't got round to sorting out stuff that should be in the car and stuff which should b…

Monday morning

Good morning all well here we are at the beginning of another week.  It has rained overnight and this morning it is windy cold and overcast.  We have had a dire weekend with Mike so today I am going to have a phone around to all the people who are supposed to be helping me.  So far I have had an endless supply of people coming and taking copious notes but nothing is changing and nothing is happening and I am reaching the end of my rope.  We are now at the stage where all our well being is being compromised by one cussed person who wants his own way.  Enough is enough if the professionals can't cope with him what do they think I can do? When the highlight of your day is going to bed there is something radically wrong.  I had a ring around my good friends and they are all in agreement that I can do no more and should get some significant help.  Frankly I think there is nothing left but a care home but how that is arranged I have no idea so I will have to do some research.  The othe…

Bamboo going crazy
Good morning all it is a typical Sunday morning here with cloud and wind and a sky heavy with rain. I did water the plants yesterday so it should rain today.  I did the veal chops for lunch yesterday and cooked them in the oven Italian style with butter, rosemary, garlic and lemon zest.  They were accompanied with new potatoes and spring greens.  When the butcher prepared them there were a few bones which I brought home for the dogs who devoured them with great pleasure so Dan not eating was a protest about the dog biscuits.  By last night he was hungry enough to eat his biscuits without any trouble.
As a family we had a concerted effort to persuade Mike to walk to the toilet with all three of us encouraging him he made it half way then turned left his zimmer frame and said he was going back to bed and promptly walked back to his room completely unaided.  This has confirmed in my mind that what I have thought for a while is true, he could make it to the toilet but …

Saturday Morning

Good morning all here we are back at yet another weekend not that that makes much difference in this house.  In fact I think if I were not writing this blog I would have no idea what day of the week it is.  The forecast threatened us with rain yesterday which never materialised in fact it was hot a muggy especially for the early part of the night we now have cloud and wind so maybe they were 24 hours out, either way the little plants need watering.
Last week was kind of busy for me but I think I have done all that is required and I am road legal and covered by breakdown cover and insurance.  The slip of paper has gone off to the DVLA so that they can keep their paper work straight.  I must say I thoroughly enjoyed my first drive in the new vehicle and it was nice to open up some of the power on the motorway.  I also played with the paddles on the steering wheel which over ride the automatic gear box.  Not something I think I am going to use much but nice to have.  I expect they would…

Friday morning

Off to have breakfast with Sandy this morning.  I spent a good few hours reading the car manual.  It seems to do just about everything by itself. Much is the same but there is plenty to play with.   The life line has been installed and is now operational.
Then came a call to tell us that my sister in law has had heart problems and is being investigated in hospital. Looking at a possible by pass to clear the problem.

Sorry I'm so late but I over slept and had to dash to make it Faversham by 9am so I am now back having had my first drive in the new baby and boy does it go.  I am not a fast driver by nature but if you need a bit of speed to get out of trouble I am confident I have what is necessary.

By the way congratulations to my friends in France and good luck for Sunday I'm talking football of course.

The weather is warming up but I believe it is due to rain this afternoon which quite frankly the young plants could do with.  If it doesn't rain then I will have to water t…

Thursday monring

Good morning all and it is a good morning we now have the new car at home.  We dashed up yesterday afternoon and picked it up having spent the morning ringing insurance and all the other fiddly little bits like the dartford crossing etc.  Anyway we are delighted with it and James chauffeured me back and gave it some welly just to see what it had under the bonnet.  It goes like the clappers and has a lovely smooth 8 speed gearbox which though automatic it has paddles on the steering wheel which allow you to over ride and either change up or down a gear.  As yet I haven't driven it so I think I might need to go to the shops for something!!!! We had to empty the old car and you just can't believe how much crud we had in it, two huge shopping bags of stuff so the first job today is to go through that and only put back that which is needed the kitchen sink can stay a home!!!!  At the moment we are without a dog crate in the back so the dogs are on house arrest until the new one ar…

Wednesday Morning

Good morning all a bit brighter this morning the sky looks as if a child with a piece of chalk has been scribbling as all you can see is vapour trails from the planes overhead. It is still pretty chilly there is no real warmth in the air yet.
I managed to get all my chores done yesterday morning and we decided that we would not have the hen for lunch but had burgers instead and for supper we had a takeaway pizza.  I must admit I do resent the price of pizza as I know, as you do, there is fourpence worth of ingredients and they have a soggy spongy bottom which is nothing like the real thing.  Maybe the Chinese and Indians would say the same thing about takeaway food from their countries but I am no expert so I accept what I am given.  The chicken is going in the oven today for lunch as Denzil will be back from his early shift so we will be four for lunch and dinner.  Having completed my chores yesterday I don't have to go out this morning so I can play in the kitchen.
Peace has …

Tuesday Morning

Good morning all no beautiful sunshine this morning and yesterdays sun only lasted until midday when we were again wreathed in cloud.  I got a few of the chores on my list done but the bank got put on hold so that is number one priority this morning.  I have also run myself out of eggs for the first time in many years.  I don't think I have fully got back into running a house of 4 adults.  I did however manage to book a hair appointment and a dental appointment two things which have been on the back burner for rather too long.
Mike ventured into the dining room at lunch time but within 5 minutes he had started a row with James which left us all upset and no one fancied their lunch thank goodness it was only corned beef hash and the dogs were happy to clear it up for us.  Today I have a chicken which I think I will do for supper rather than lunch as I don't want to spend the morning in the kitchen when I have other things to do.
I have done all the measuring up of the dogs so …

Monday morning

Image
Good morning all this morning we have a clear blue sky with not one single cloud to be seen.  I don't suppose it will last all day but it is lovely to see for a change.

Yesterday went according to plan with little happening out of the ordinary except I managed to run out of washing up liquid - what a tragedy I have had to leave the pots and pans.  I stuffed the dishwasher to the gunwales but sadly that which did not fit will have to wait until I get some washing up liquid.  I must admit of all the things to run out of washing up liquid is not the most disastrous.
I don't want to anger the gods of fate but Mike seems to have made a bit of effort and has made it as far as the dining room with his zimmer frame. It must be all of ten feet but it is an improvement so I am not complaining.  Another ten feet will see him as far as the toilet which will make my life a lot easier. Given it has taken a month to get this far I am not holding out any great hope.  He sat at the table for …

Sunday morning

Image
Good morning it is bright and sunny here today and the wind has died down.  For me there is only one thing more exciting than a new car and that is a new puppy.  I am bubbling over with excitement and counting down the days. It is nice to have something good to look forward to for a change. Life has been pretty dull of late.
Although today is Sunday it is a working day for Denzil so Sunday lunch will be on Tuesday which is his next day off. It makes sense to me to have a big lunch when we are all here. So today we will be having fish (bassa fillets) with creamed spinach and new potatoes.
I had a lovely morning yesterday and went to visit my friends in the road. One is Welsh so I stopped off to congratulate her on the great football win.  Though none of us are actual fans we were all happy to see David beat Goliath.  I then went on to have coffee with my Japanese friend who is having her kitchen remodelled and what a lovely job they are making of it.  Needless to say we discussed the …

This is the new baby apparently the colour is called orkney grey and it only has 18,000 on the clock so just about run in.  It has the new Jaguar engine and gearbox so it should last me a good few years. When we got home I had a minor meltdown do you think I could find the the registration document for the old car I ended up turning out piles of paper work but looking for things in a panic is never a good idea.  In the end I found it exactly where it should be so now I have all that paper work in one place ready to go when we get the call.  The dealer was very efficient and as they reckon to sell 60 cars per week they do have a massive turnover which means they can sell slightly cheaper than other dealers.
On Monday I will have to take a trip to the bank and make sure they know I am about to make a big purchase on my debit card.  Then it is just a case of waiting until the car is ready for collection so I am like a child at christmas.
A psychologist came to see Mike yesterday afterno…

Friday morning but only just

Good morning all I am back from the show rooms and have made the purchase of the new car which will be ready for collection in 7-10 days so they can do a full detailing and my car can go to them filthy they don't care.  We had a miserable drive up to Chelmsford [yes Joy I know that is where you live] the traffic was horrendous with miles and miles of tail backs in both directions.  Fortunately on the return journey the traffic had cleared and we made good time back home.
I am very pleased with the purchase the new vehicle which has a very low milage and is nicely appointed. James drove me there and back and had a good look over the car so I was glad of the back up.  I now have a few jobs to do like organising how the dartford crossing is going to be sorted as it goes on the car registration and also we need to look a new dog cage for the back.  Fortunately I have not blown every cent on the car so I still have some wiggle room.  They did have a Maserati for sale but sadly it was …
