Tuesday morning

Good morning all - yesterday was a bit of a slob day I didn't do much but some knitting and watching rubbish on the TV.  Lunch was the last of the boiled ham with bubble and squeak and for dinner we had a take away curry as the leftovers are finished and I need to get cooking again.  I went to Morrisons the other day in search of a lettuce as I fancied a salad but having wandered around I came back with a few bargains but completely forgot the lettuce which just goes to show I am not functioning at full capacity and my nose is still running though I don't feel too bad.  I stayed away from the hospital as they advise apparently they have have enough bugs of their own!!!!
I feel a bit mean not visiting but I think it is the right thing to do and Mike is safer not seeing me until this drippy nose has departed.  I will give them a ring later and check up on him.  James was chatting to person on line who had his appendix removed at the medway hospital and the food was so bad he di…

Monday Morning

Good morning all.  Having spent yesterday sleeping I feel a bit brighter this morning I still have a drippy nose but feel better in myself.  My very good friend Elly went to visit Mike and took him a bag of christmas goodies and reported back that he was in good spirits and had been delighted with the bits I had taken him.  I will ring the hospital today but I think I had better keep my drippy nose to myself the very last thing Mike needs now is a cold.
Ham eggs and bubble and squeak are on the menu for today so nothing too taxing in the kitchen.  I weighed the remaining wool and discovered there was just not quite enough to make a second jacket however the pattern has a short sleeved version so that is what I am going to do.  I must admit knitting it all in one piece is very easy the only bits that are a bit taxing are the neck band and cuffs but I am quite good at picking up stitches.  The front borders are all knitted at the same time as the fronts.  Now that I have done one the n…

Sunday Morning

Little kimono jacket finished but in need of an iron on the seams.  It is much more coat weight than cardigan but hopefully it will keep a little person warm and it's one way to use up gash wool.  The turkey is done and finished but I have enough turkey broth to have a bath in.  No problem for me I love it.
I went in to see Mike yesterday and took him in a bag full of goodies I know his appetite is small so it was all little bits and bobs he could munch his way through during the day.  He seemed in better spirits and the nurse told me they had been bullying him which is the only way to go so they have my full permission as it is exactly what he needs. Left to his own devices he will do nothing.  Fingers crossed that they get the infection under control and finally get him out to rehab on the third attempt.
I have been feeling a few degrees under for the last couple of days with a runny nose and I think the cold has finally got me so I may well give myself a day off and stay i…

Boxing Day

Image
Good morning all well the big day is over and the kitchen looks like a bomb has gone off in it. However there is plenty of food left so guess what is on the menu today?  You've got it left overs. The dogs had a wonderful time with their new toys and couldn't believe their luck when they joined us for lunch.  Dan got his wish to be a lap dog for a while as you can see in the photo, he has no appreciation of his size and doesn't worry about his dignity.

My visit to the hospital was a productive one as the registrar was there and I managed to have a chat with him.  He has clarified the medical situation that Mike now has a nosocomial infection [hospital acquired] for which they are bombarding him with massive doses of heavy duty antibiotics and it is going to be a long road to recovery. I have been well aware of this risk hence my eagerness to him out of hospital as soon as possible. Mike was pleased to see me and even more pleased to see his panettone.  The hospital had don…

Christmas day

My turn to drive everyone crazy the carols are playing at a good volume and I am going to sit and eat a slab of panettone with my coffee.  Then I am going to the hospital to visit Mike and see if they have the face to turn me away as it is not official visiting.  Once that is done it will be on with the christmas lunch.

Have a great day and may all your roast potatoes be crispy

Christmas Eve

Good morning all it is wet and windy here but not desperately cold.  I took all Mikes bits and pieces to him yesterday and tried to have a chat with the house officer.  They are pumping him full of antibiotics but my query was, do they know what they are dealing with in terms of bacteria.  Well that floored him and in his broken english he mutter and mumbled but didn't actually come up with an answer.  I explained that we have been down this road before it was after three courses of antibiotics that a nurse had the sense to check and low and behold the wrong antibiotics were being given one course of the correct ones and he was better.  With the number of resistant bugs around it makes even more sense now to check.  A scatter gun approach doesn't seem to have worked so far.  If indeed he is still infected. In which case why try to discharge him? either they have got it wrong twice or he is physically ok but psychologically in trouble.  Either way something needs to be done.  …

Wednesday and Turkey out day

Good morning all yesterday I had a bit of a melt down the rehab have now refused to take Mike. James went and collected all his stuff and apologised for all the messing around they have been caused.  I just felt deflated and defeated I don't think there is anything else I can do to ameliorate the situation.  Today I will take him in his stuff but I don't feel much like a friendly visitor and who knows where he will be for christmas now that the rehab have refused to take him.
Anyway that aside today is our final shopping expedition I need some fruit [Clementines Oranges Apples Lemon and Limes] always useful to have around.  Milk and Bread then I think we can slam the front door and abandon the outside world for a few days.
The new router turned up after lunch and the boys have set it all up so it is running very smoothly no more crashing devices.  iPads iPhones and play station all running smoothly.  I did however have to reenter a million passwords before I could get myself …

Tuesday morning

Good morning all well the french farce of moving Mike continues he was at last destined to go to rehab yesterday but then threw a wobbly and ended up staying in hospital.  I spent the whole day dangling and waiting for phone calls that never came.  I was all organised to meet Mike at rehab and help him settle in but it never happened.  Today is another day and they will try again but if he cuts up rough I can see this being another frustrating day.  I am at a loss I really don't know what else I can do so I am handing over to the professionals who might have more success with him than I do but I can see him spending christmas in the hospital at this rate.
There is one bright light on the horizon and that is the new router is due to be delivered by courier today and once we have it all plugged in it is just a case of asking for Virgin to activate it at their end so lets hope that goes smoothly.  The boys are more computer savvy than I am so it will be down to them to get it all up…

Monday morning

Good morning all here we go on the final countdown.  I am well behind schedule this morning and Denny is already here working her magic.  Yesterday was a peaceful day with everyone doing their own thing.  I have a box of stuff to go to the charity shop today and a hundred other errands to run. Mikes stuff is still at the rehab place so I am off to fetch it as it looks unlikely that he is going to make it back there in the foreseeable future.  We were really hoping he would be there again soon but things are moving very slowly and beds don't seem to be coming available.  I am hoping if I collect his stuff sods law will operate and a bed will come through.  In the mean time we are up and down to the hospital to visit.
My box of vegetables arrives yesterday and in it is everything I need for the Christmas lunch so I am going to relegate it to the garage to keep cool for a few days as the fridge is full to overflowing.  We have ear marked Wednesday as the final shopping day when we w…

Sunday morning

Good morning all - I can't believe we are in the final count down where does the time go.  I had a lovely chat with my friend and she had made pancakes with lemon and sugar for our breakfast meeting.  We have been friends since she came to clean for me aged 16 but telling everyone she was 18 since then she has had three children and is a happily married.  Christmas presents were swapped all of which are edible with the exception of some squeaky toys for the dogs.  Talking of the dogs my lovely clean Dan went out for a walk and managed to trip over his own feet and fall in the mud yet again.
Denzil and I went to visit Mike and this new ward is a bit more lax on visiting times so we were able to get the car parked with little trouble as we were a bit early.  He was his usual miserable self and is only pleased to see us for about 5 minutes then he wants us to go which is all a bit depressing.  I can only hope that things change for the better once they get him to rehab.  I have a …

Saturday morning

Good morning all. Yesterday was a very busy day with a big shop for all sorts of stupid things that were running low like toilet paper and soap powder etc.  Necessary but boring and not the sort of things you want to run out of.  I did however get some cranberries and have made the sauce for the big day.
Mike has been moved to the new ward while he waits for his rehab bed to become available which is driving all of us crackers.  It is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string!!!! No one has an answer so we just wait and wait.  I will go and visit him later and hope he is in a better frame of mind. There just doesn't seem to be any way to cheer him up and he doesn't seem to realise that his condition is so much better than when he was admitted. You would think that as they are trying to discharge him would give him a hint.
This morning I am off to visit my friend Elaine for a cup of coffee and a catch up chat which will break the monotony of home life for a couple of hou…

Friday Morning

Not long to go now just another week and we will be there at last I am almost ready so it should be an easy day.  Chestnut stuffing, gravy and bread sauce all made and in the freezer and all I have left to do is make some cranberry sauce.  The christmas card have been done but I have only put them through neighbours doors the rest have been done via the internet and the money has gone to Macmillan.
Yesterdays visit to Mike was a bit of a disaster I had just had a couple of fresh crabs delivered so I hastily cracked a couple of claws and made Mike a lovely crab sandwich [not impressed] I then tried to explain that they were going to move him from high dependancy to a less intensive ward while he waited for a bed in rehab to become available.  He took this all wrong and got really cross with me so I came home well and truly deflated.  I am getting fed up with being the wicked witch of the west no matter what I do.
This morning I have the peaceful task of picking over the two crabs for…

Another Thursday Morning!

Good morning all none of you told me yesterday was Wednesday I was in a flat spin as I was so late I even got the day wrong.  I took Tubby and Dan with me and they had a wonderful time so much so that Dan had to have a bath when we got home.  At the foot of Shiona's garden there is a mud filled drainage ditch which Dan found irresistible.  He certainly has the breeds stamina and spent the day charging around the garden like a lunatic.  Mean while indoors I had a lovely lunch with Shiona and a couple of her friends it was lovely to be out of the home surroundings and away from the all the nonsense that is home life at the moment.
Shortly I will ring the hospital and see if any progress has been made though I am not hopeful.  I didn't go in to see Mike yesterday so he due a visit today.  The last thing I want is to drive to the hospital just as he is leaving in an ambulance and I don't trust them to let me know. Communication is a word they don't seem to understand.

Thursday morning

Very late this morning I had a bit of a rough night finally getting to sleep at 4am.  It would be today as I am due to go to Shiona's now I am all behind schedule.  Regarding Mike I took in some olive oil ear drops to soften the wax in his ears as I knew they would not do anything - good job the problem was ear wax not appendicitis!!!! Sorry but I am rapidly losing patience with the hospital however they are still trying to get Mike back to rehab.  Physically he is much better but it is his mental health that concerns me not only is he bored but isolated because he cant hear and he is just shutting down. So the move is becoming more and more urgent.
Sorry to be so curt but I am in a big rush now have a good day at least it is not raining here.

Tuesday Morning

Good morning all first some good news and that is that they are trying for a bed for Mike back at the rehab unit the bad news is that they have to go through the whole assessment procedure again.  On the up side after asking on 5 separate occasions if some one could look in Mikes ears to check for wax as he is complaining his hearing aids don't work.  Yesterday I took matters into my own hands and went visiting with an auriscope and checked for myself and low and behold there was the marble bust of Cesare. Now we know why his hearing aids don't work.
The man came and did the final measure for the blinds and they will be delivered on 12 January so a nice new year present and a good excuse to have a major clean first.  Virgin have done the work on the exchange and the new router will arrive on 22nd by courier.  Once we have installed it we then need to phone them to activate it.
My exterior light has been broken for ages so yesterday Denzil fixed it which makes such a diffe…

Monday morning

Good morning all.  I had a chat with the staff yesterday about Mike and apparently the problem is that the rehab place only keep the bed for 24 hours so now we are back at square one looking for a bed.  Last time it took over a week to find somewhere lets hope it is a bit quicker this time.  Being stuck in the hospital is not doing Mikes depression any good at all.  He is not ill enough to warrant the ward he is on so he is just bored witless.  While I visited James went and did the shopping so we killed two birds with one stone and just look what he bought us for christmas.

I have a passion for this type of ham and all the off cuts end up in soups and stocks.  There is a lot of meat on a whole leg so I have ideas of vac packing some for later. It comes complete with the stand and a knife and sharpener all for £27.  I guess we will not be stuck for suppers for quite a while.  I tried to buy one last year but they sold out before I could get there.
Today is going to be a busy day as I…

Sunday morning

Good morning all.  If like me you were hoping for an update on Mike you and I are both disappointed.  I went to visit yesterday and the ward he was on had open visiting but when I arrived he was nowhere to be found so I asked where he was and was told he had been transferred to the ward that discharged him.  They rang through and asked if I could pop in as I was there but sadly I was refused entry.  So I came home madder than a wet hen.  Yet another communications failure.  I will try again today and hope for some good news.
The guy came to talk me through the replacement blinds which I have decided to go ahead with as I have a huge reduction as I have had my blinds for 10 years.  I have decided on the honeycomb style which will give extra insulation without cutting out too much light.

Hopefully they will keep heat in in the winter and keep the heat out in the summer.  I must admit the chap selling the blinds was a really lovely man and very easy to talk to as he didn't have to …

Saturday morning

Good morning all.  First an update on Mike - still nothing - I spoke to the nurse in charge and she agreed that they were not doing anything for Mike that could not be done in the rehab placement so why is he still there? The medics are just very slow at getting things moving and now it is the weekend the hospital is run by fairies no doubt nothing will happen until Monday.  I had a nightmare last night I dreamt I came home in the car and found him stood in the road in an open backed gown where he had been dumped. In my dream I then tried to find out how this had happened and was just given the runaround.  I think this was a frustration dream rather than a nightmare. All the uncertainty is driving us all crackers.
I managed to get a bit of cooking done yesterday and my pigs in blankets are safely in the freezer.  I found some wonderful plastic boxes in Aldi which can stand up to 200ÂșC so I can put them straight in the oven to reheat.  I also made a batch of meat balls half we ate for…

Friday Morning

Good morning all well we are at the end of another week which has been pretty topsy turvy.  As Shiona was here I phoned for an update on Mikes condition and was politely told they would not give any information over the phone.  This is in fact correct procedure even though it is very frustrating after all I could be anybody.  I did my training at Hammersmith which was almost next door to the BBC so we often had famous people admitted and the press would try every trick in the book to get information including turning up at visiting with bunches of flowers claiming to be nephews. So we had to be very vigilant if we were to maintain the patients confidentiality.  The funniest incident was a guy who was a bigamist and we had all sorts of fun trying to keep the two wives separate but thats a whole other story.
Shiona and I decided to hit Faversham as she too needed some goodies and what a lot there were having almost filled the car we then hit Aldi as well, finally getting home for a ver…

Thursday Morning

Good morning all another day another dollar, nothing has changed Mike is still in hospital but they are hoping to get him back to rehab soon.  When is soon? well your guess is as good as mine.  I find not knowing very disconcerting. Visiting is really depressing as you are treated to a tirade of how everyone is an imbecile no one know what they are doing etc etc. Not true the care he is getting is fine and the staff are on the ball with his condition after all it is bread and butter to them.
Yesterday I put the duck carcass in a pot and made a lovely broth which we had for lunch along with some little pasta and lots of parmesan it was really delicious.  I also had some cauliflower and broccoli which was on the blink so I made a cauliflower cheese.  It is so easy to make cheese sauce in the thermomix.  Supper was a fridge forage and toast.  I had picked over the duck carcass so the dogs thought they had died and gone to heaven.
Denzil took on the laundry duties so all I have to do is …

Wednesday morning

Good morning all yesterday was another day in limbo Mike is still in hospital and as yet we have no news as to what is happening or when.  So it is a case of treading water until there is some change or some information.  In the mean time we are just keeping the house going and getting on with the hundred and one jobs that need doing.  We have been living on quick food so last night I roasted a duck for supper and today the carcass is going in the pot to make stock.  I must say it was lovely and made a change from baked beans and fish fingers.
I did a fairly large shop so we should be ok for a few days.  I also made a large batch of bubble and squeak which is in the freezer ready to accompany cold meats over the christmas holiday.  Today I am intending to make lots of sweated vegetables, carrot onion and celery, and put them in the freezer ready for soups and stews which cuts down on the work.  Anything for an easy life!!!
Having had a day of rain yesterday it is much colder but love…

Tuesday morning

It is hosing down with rain outside and from what I have seen of the weather forecast this is likely to set in for the day.  Thank goodness I buzzed around doing the errands yesterday.  However I do have to take a trip to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription.
I went to see Mike last night in hospital and he was very miserable but his physical condition looks good and he is off the oxygen and maintaining his saturation levels.  I am hoping they see fit to send him back to rehab fairly soon.  I had a chat with the sister of the ward who went through his notes with me and I filled in the blanks for her.  However knowing the system they will probably send him back to the ward he came from which will just delay things.
The wonderful Denny is due today and for once the house is quite tidy.  I have plans today to make lots of bubble and squeak and put it in individual portions in the freezer as it makes an ideal accompaniment to cold meats over the holidays.  Actually I have lots of veg…

Monday morning

Sorry to be so late again I have been waiting to see if there was any change with Mike but as yet he hasn't been seen by the Medics so we are none the wiser.  I think the consensus of opinion is that he got himself in a state so hopefully they will be looking to send him back to rehab.  He is not on antibiotics so they don't think it is a recurrence of the pneumonia.  In the mean time we are just treading water and keeping ourselves fed and watered.  I need a major shop as we are down to a packet of fish fingers which will do for lunch but then there is nothing obvious for supper so I had better get going and sort out the food for the week.
Denzil is due to see the GP tomorrow to get his forms filled in so he can drive commercially after which he can look for a job but first he needs a tachograph from the DVLA nothing is ever simple is it?
Anyway things are moving forward, all be it very slowly, and patience seems to be the name of the game; sadly I am not good at waiting but…

Sunday morning

Well that didn't last long Mike is back in hospital again.  I visited him at 1pm and by 5 they were calling an ambulance.  He was fine when I saw him so he deteriorated rather quickly.  I rang at 6am and he is sound asleep and stable so I will leave it till a bit later to see what they intend to do with him.

Saturday morning

Image
Good morning all - Mike is now in his new rehab placement and last night I went to visit.  All I can say is I am jealous it is like a hotel with waitress service and I would willingly spend a couple of weeks in there.  He has a lovely individual room with a toilet 2 doors away which is in fact closer than it is at home.  There is a nice dining room and sitting room not much further down the corridor. He has a nice view out of his window over a courtyard garden and the staff seem very friendly and kind I was immediately offered a cup of tea and they had made Mike a couple of slices of toast which I insisted he ate.  He was worried that the hospital had sent him out with no medication but within 5 minutes his medication turned up and one of the drugs had been specially sent up in a taxi as they didn't have it in stock.  Today I have a list of things to take in to him as he will be expected to dress they are short of zimmer frames so I will take his in to him which should make mobil…

Friday Morning

Good morning all another lovely long lie in this morning following what was a very nice relaxing day yesterday.  Shiona's garden proved very exciting for Dan and Tubby who spent the whole day charging around playing chase and came home absolutely pooped.  I am also pleased to announce that Dan made the journey without being sick for the first time so that was another bonus.  I think his car sickness is now a thing of the past.
Shiona had made a lovely fish pie for lunch and I ate myself to a standstill so supper was unnecessary.  She had also rooted out some knitting patterns and a bag of wool the size of a pillow so I don't think I am going to want for knitting for the next 5 years.
There was no word from the hospital to say they were moving Mike so I will ring them shortly and see if today is the day.  I will go in and see him at 2pm if he is still there and hope he has forgotten the previous incident.
Today we have sunshine which makes a wonderful change form all the du…

Thursday morning

Good morning all today I am going over to Shiona's house and having a day off which is probably just as well as Mike thinks I am the wicked witch of the west.  Yesterday when I went to visit I discovered that he has been hiding his frusemide tablets because he decided he didn't want or need them.  I tried to explain why they were necessary but he wasn't buying it so I dropped him in it with the staff and I am now persona non grata and was summarily dismissed with a look that would fry eggs.  We are hoping they might get him moved today and hopefully a 24 hour break from me will allow him to realise I am only doing things to try to make him better not to be mean.
In the morning we had appointments at the vets with both Tubby and Dante who were due their boosters and annual health check.  They were seen by a very nice Spanish lady vet who gave them a thorough look over and was impressed with their condition and general fitness.  Tubby is built like a tank and reminds me of …

Wednesday morning

Good morning all another long lie in but punctuated with phone calls.  Now that Mike can use his phone he rings and asks me to come in every morning and every morning I explain that visiting doesn't start until 2pm.  The ward clerk then phoned me only to say the same thing which makes it all rather distressing.  It looks like they are ready to move him to rehab but are waiting for oxygen to be on hand.
We got loads of chores done yesterday renewal of Mikes blue badge which meant a trip to the library which is impossible to park anywhere near by as it is in the centre of town.  I got my hair cut so I no longer look like a shaggy pony and it should last until well after the holidays.  Today I have to take the dogs to the vet for their booster jabs.  The bins are out and the boys have walked the dog now all I need to do is sort out the food for the day.  As we will be walking home past the bakers I thing pasties might make a nice lunch.  Then I have some chicken thighs for supper bu…

Tuesday Morning

Good morning all I have finally worked out how I am sleeping so much better.  When I wake at 4am I take my antidepressant tablet and then snuggle back down.  Of course it must act quickly and with full power on an empty stomach and away I go.  It has taken me a while to work this out which is quite embarrassing really.  Anyway I am happier now I know what is going on and it makes sense to me.
Yesterdays visit to the hospital confirmed that they are looking for a placement for Mike but he has to be assessed by the community staff first.  No one has had a look in his ears and when I asked him one of the nurses heard me shouting at him and told me they are not allow to look in ear this is a respiratory ward.  What kind of nursing doesn't allow you to look in a patients ears to see if they are bunged up with wax.  It is not as if I have asked them to do anything just look, there are days when I despair about the profession.  They have an audiology department in the hospital but the…
