Monday morning

Good morning all sorry to be so late again but I had a late night followed by a very early morning so I went back to sleep and joy of joys I don't have a crashing headache.  I think my medication is working really well.  Perhaps I need to change my title to late readers instead of early!!
Yesterday was pretty boring with little happening which in the house is a good thing.  I had a run to Aldi and stocked up on the ingredients for making another big batch of bolognese sauce. As usual it was packed and freezing cold in the shop but I have learned and wore a padded body warmer so I didn't freeze.  I also had masses of broccoli so I am intending to make broccoli and stilton soup for lunch today.
Dan managed to get himself into trouble by ripping off a branch with an unripe fig which he brought into the house to eat.  Then discovered that unripe figs are not good to eat so he just made a big mess on the carpet.  Fortunately it came up with a dustpan and brush and left no stain …

Sunday morning

Good morning all very late again I am sleeping like the dead.  Perhaps it is the accumulation of so many short nights finally catching up with me.  Yesterday was a pretty uneventful day I got on with lots of knitting and have finished the back of a jumper/jacket and am halfway up the first front so cracking on well.  It is yet another hairy yarn so a bit slow to knit.
We ate out of the freezer I had a pack with the bolognese sauce so it was merely a case of boiling some pasta and throwing a salad together.  James made supper which was bacon and eggs but he nipped up the road and bought one portion of chips which we shared.
Today I need a 10,000 mile service before I head off to Aldi for a few essentials.  I have no news from Thailand as I guess their banks are closed on a Sunday though as a Buddhist country I am not sure which is their day off.  Hopefully HSBC have remember their password and managed to get up and running.  If there is a next time I think I might go for carrier pig…

Saturday morning

Good morning all, first let me tell you about the Albanian dish.  It was very nice and definitely something I would do again.  However, I think it is more suited to winter food than summer and would lend itself to many and various variations. The base meat was lamb but beef or any other meat would do just as well.  The 60 grams of rice is important as it dries out the base thus allowing the custard type top to sit on it without mixing in.  As it happened I made the base and prepared the top then left it until 45 minutes before we wanted to eat when I put the two parts together and baked.  So an ideal dish if you have visitors who are arriving at an uncertain time.
I expect you have heard that HSBC have broken their abacus so lots of money has not been paid into accounts and this might be the problem with the Thai transfer.  Anyway I have sent all the details so hopefully when they are up and running again the money should be forthcoming. What timing! if I were the paranoid type I cou…

Money has left my bank but as yet not arrived in Thai bank so I have just sent the complete details so hopefully they can find it.  It was dead easy to send from this end but the Thai language is all in their strange alphabet

See what I mean how am I supposed to work out what the words mean? this piece was nicked from google I do hope it doesn't say anything terrible.  Anyway fingers crossed that the details I have sent will do the trick.
Many years ago I paid a hotel bill with a cheque in Lecco Italy and one year later I was asked by my bank to verify my signature.  Apparently the Lecco bank banked in Como, Como banked in Rome, Rome banked in New York.  So my cheque had been all round the world and accrued a ton of paper work from all the various banks.  Thank heavens for the internet and electronic banking.  Lets hope this gets sorted out quickly.
Today I am going to play in the kitchen I am going to make an Albanian dish which is a lamb stew with a hat of a sort of custard.  Wh…

Thursday morning

Good morning all.  News is that I have sent money to Thailand at least I hope I have.  There is nothing from the bank to say otherwise so I hope I filled in all the details correctly.  My next concern is the price of tickets at short notice are astronomical so I will have to wait and see if what I have sent is sufficient.

Yesterday was another day of rain rain and more rain but this morning so far we are dry but the forecast is for more rain around lunch time.

Lunch yesterday was pork chops with sage and onion stuffing and for supper we had rather large hotdogs made with baguettes and bratwurst with loads of mustard and tomato ketchup.  James has taken over the supper menu which has lifted the load from my shoulders considerably.

Today for lunch I have out some drumsticks which I intend to cook with a barbecue sauce and salad but supper is still a mystery. No doubt we will think of something.

Shiona is back from Scotland her mother having rallied and is now back to eating and drinkin…

Wednesday Morning

What a grotty day weather wise - we were dry until lunch time then it was back to the rain which persisted all afternoon evening and most of the night.  I believe today is supposed to be even worse but at the moment it is dry but there is a strong wind blowing.  I am now bereft of knitting which doesn't help so I find myself watching hours or rubbish on the TV.  Oh boy, in the time it has taken me to type these words it has started to rain.  I don't think I can remember quite such a wet August I feel so sorry for the people who have elected to holiday in England it must be miserable.  We had already decided to abandon shooting today as the forecast was so poor.  I enjoy shooting but I see no pleasure in getting completely soaked.  James friend who did so well the last time we went has now bought himself an air rifle but needed to a place to fire it and see how it worked.  Our garden is decorated with a target so he spent some time trying to align his telescopic sight.  In the…

Good morning all.  I am up a bit earlier this morning but not stupid o'clock and no panic attacks for the last few days so the medication seems to be doing the trick.  I am generally much brighter in myself which can only be a good thing.
The weather yesterday was as forecast it was dry in the very early morning which allowed James to get the dogs walked and he just made it home as the heavens opened and then it rain for the rest of the day sometime torrential and some times drizzle but always wet.
For lunch we had a lovely dover sole each with a big mixed salad and some little new potatoes sautéed in the butter the fish had been cooked in.  James has taken over doing the supper and we had sausage, beans and eggs.  It was nice to have a fry up for a change.
I finished the second jumper for Shiona but when I had a look at the third I couldn't make head not tail of where she had reached in the pattern and there was a dropped stitch which I couldn't retrieve as this to…

Monday morning

Good morning all.  As usual chaos reins in this house.  We received an email from Thailand apparently job opportunities have materialised so we are just hanging in the breeze, is he coming home who knows?  I think a Milton quote fits the bill "they also serve who only stand and WAIT"  slightly out of context but it seems to fit the bill.  The only information we have is an email address so we are on hold until we are contacted.  Very fortunately my antidepressants have kicked in and I am as calm as a mill pond waiting for whatever happens.  You now know as much as I do which is nothing really.
James had a tolerable birthday we hit Aldi at opening time and had a good restock with a view to us possibly being four soon.  Anyway we will motor through the food as usual.  Last night supper was a nice plate of figs, parma ham and camembert cheese, light but tasty.
The weather is dull and we have had some rain but nothing dramatic so far just wet and miserable. At the moment it…

Sunday Morning

Good morning all.  Sorry about yesterday but I was furiously writing emails to a fro to Thailand trying to to sort out the return of my eldest son.  So now we will be back to a family of 4 which has some what needed a bit of a rethink.  If all goes according to plan we should have him home within the week.  Just as well the spare bed is already made up.  In many ways this will not be a problem as he is at least able bodied and another pair of hands is always a help.  Hopefully it will not be too long before he can find work of some kind and I certainly will find it easier to cook for 4 rather than for 3.
Yesterday we put Dan into the bath - I have a special dog bath which means I can bath him in the garden.  He was as good as gold and now he is all lovely and fluffy and smells like a fairy. There is still plenty of work required on his coat but hopefully when Shiona returns I can take him over to her groomer and get a proper job done. At the moment he looks like he has had a hair cut…

Saturday morning

Very short and sweet this morning the eldest boy needs rescuing from Thailand so I have my hands full trying to sort this out.  No time to sit and chat.  Will keep you updated as soon as I know what is going on.

Friday morning

Yesterday is a bit of a blur we were busy in the morning with Denny who had a look through the garage and helped herself to a pile of bits.  She was like a child at christmas but I was delighted that some of the stuff was leaving.  I had shopping to do so had trip to Aldi and also the pharmacy to collect a prescription.  With three of us requiring medication we seem to be permanently running up and down to the chemist.  I have asked if it is possible to make the prescription coincide so we only have one trip and pick the whole lot up in one go.  We will have to see if they can sort this out and save us endless trips up and down.
The chicken legs made a nice lunch and supper was some meat pies which I am addicted to at the moment.  Today I am intending to have a pasta bolognese as I made a big pot yesterday which should be enough to have some in the freezer as well.  Supper tonight will be some fish cakes with creamed spinach.  I really need to get on with some laundry today but it …

Thursday morning

Good morning all.  What a smashing day we had yesterday.  While the sun lasted we were out shooting.  We met James friend at the shoot then it was time for a bacon and egg bap.  We had a great round with the novice taking home the trophy together with a good slap in face from not mounting the gun correctly.  We've all done it once then you remember a 12 bore has quite a kick.  We were back home by 1pm I cleaned the guns and put them to bed while James took the dogs for a run.  Mike had had a beef and onion pie for his lunch we were still full from our bap.  Then it was time for a snooze but I didn't sleep just rested and got on with a bit of knitting.  Supper was a take away curry from out local nepalese restaurant.  The Gurkhas were stationed here for many years so I guess that is why we have food from Nepal.
Denny, who should have come on Tuesday, asked to move to Thursday this week which of course is no problem to me as one day is much the same as the next.  Yet again it h…

Wenesday morning

Good morning all a bit earlier this morning.  It is only just beginning to get light so it is difficult to see just what the weather is like.  My laundry is still hanging on the line having had an extra rain rinse yesterday afternoon.
James and I tackled the garage and picked out a tool kit which we think will do for now.  After all you only need so many claw hammers etc.  Now we know what others can take so hopefully we can gradually get rid of what is left.  Once we have offered it around the remainder will go to the tip.  The next move it to put a large heavy duty rubbish sack in each room and shed so that as we come across rubbish we can dispose of it easily.  I must say I felt much relieved once that job was done there is still loads to do but at least I have a plan instead of just avoiding doing anything.
We had a fry up for lunch with bacon egg and beans and then for supper we each had a lovely sirloin steak with fried mushrooms and a big tomato salad made with all our own t…

Tuesday morning

Good morning all - we have had another dousing of rain overnight but the weather forecast is for a dry but cloudy day today.  I must say it looks pretty grim outside at the moment.
Yesterday started with a great kerfuffle James had taken the dogs for a walk and Dan returned with loads of burrs in his coat which he proceeded to try and chew out.  This resulted in great coughing and finally the loss of his breakfast.  I combed out the burrs but he then went nuts and was trying to eat anything green which included the box hedge [poison] so to settle him down I put him in his crate and gave him some lettuce which he ate and then settled. This was very odd behaviour but at least lettuce would do him no harm.  Once he had calmed down I gave him another breakfast and he was fine for the rest of the day.
The weekend chicken got finished off we just had a bowl of broth with tubetti [little pasta tubes] for lunch and for supper I made a big bowl of chicken caesar salad.  In the end I had man…

Monday morning

What time do call this then, hardly early.  I woke at 3.30 and it was very chilly so I decided bed was the best place to be so I dosed until 5am when I realised I had given myself a headache so I took 2 paracetamol and promptly fell back asleep and have only just this second woken up.  No headache no panic no nothing so all good.
Yesterday was an Aldi shopping day and I really pushed the boat out and bought myself the LED reading glasses which I could hardly believe.  The pack contained the glasses and a glasses case, a cord for round your neck and 4 spare batteries all for £2.99.  Sheer madness, anyway I tested them out last night when it was dark and they work very well.
On the food front I bought a chicken to put in the halogen and prepared a tray of mixed vegetables courgettes, mushrooms, onion, red pepper and baby potatoes.  Supper was the inevitable figs with parma ham and some camembert.  Today I need to deal with the left overs of the chicken which I think I will make into a…

Sunday morning

Good morning all we have sunshine this morning for a change but there is still a great deal of cloud over head and no wind to speak of.  Yesterday was a bit of a non day we just ticked over on idle most of the day.  I made a carbonara for lunch and James did us all a burger in a bun for supper.  I picked yet more figs which I may poach and freeze for a winter treat.
Today is Tubby's second birthday and James had bought him an indestructible ball - well that is what it says on the packet - Tubby has a set gnashers that can get through most things but fortunately he doesn't use them indiscriminately.  He and Dan do a lot of play fighting which looks horrid and very rough at times but they have never hurt each other despite the flashing of teeth and general wrestling.
I need to do a bit of shopping this morning as I have run down my supplies over the week and a restock would be good.  My veg box doesn't quite last a full week so I start to run low and need a top up before…

Saturday morning

Image
Fortunately Mike had a visit from the occupational therapist yesterday and she was happy to relieve me of the fruit.  As you can see there are just too many figs for us to cope with unless you make jam which I don't as we don't eat it.
The weather was dull with just the odd signs of the sun and then more rain in the evening.  This morning it is still very overcast and dull looking.  I spent a good portion of the morning picking over two crabs which though tedious is a nice sitting down job.  I was concerned that the crab would not be enough for three so I had taken out of the freezer some scallops and some prawns so in the end we had a very sumptuous lunch.  It was a real seafood feast along with a massive green salad we all ate our fill.  For supper we treated ourselves to a small Chinese takeaway.
Dan seems to have got over his stomach upset and 24 hours on plain boiled rice seems to have done the trick.  I am now clean out of basmati rice so a little shopping is in or…

Friday morning

Well the monsoon season has started here in Kent.  Yesterday we had two huge downpours of epic proportions accompanied by thunder and lightening.  It was very definitely a day for staying indoors it was so dark with the thunder clouds overhead that we had to have lights on in the house all day. Fortunately we live at the top of a hill so we are never in danger of flooding but the patio was inches deep in water.  This morning we are just left with dripping branches and a generally soggy garden we are still wreathed in cloud but it is bit brighter and doesn't look ominous.
Dan seems to have recovered his equilibrium after 24 hours on boiled rice, however he is complaining bitterly of starvation which in his case is quite normal he always tells everyone he is starving to death.  This morning I will put him back on his normal food and hope that whatever was upsetting him has passed through.
The fish monger deliver a beautiful freshly boiled cock crab to me which we were going to have…

Thursday morning

Yesterday was a miserable day weather wise and today looks just as dull.  It has rained overnight so the garden is all damp this morning. It looks really autumnal rather than high summer.  I had a pretty bad day yesterday but I guess that is to be expected as I have been feeling so much better. This morning I have woken feeling fine so I hope it was just a blip.  As it turns out when I made plans for the menu yesterday I had completely forgotten that I had boiled a piece of ham.  It was only a tiny piece so it did us for lunch along with a big bowl of coleslaw which I made using the sweetheart cabbage.  The slaw came round a second time with some salmon fish cakes for supper.
Dan is a few degrees under and has an upset stomach which I can only put down to him and Tubby helping themselves to the lower fruit on the fig tree which are still unripe.  Silly boys!!!!  Anyway Dan lost his supper so today he will be on boiled rice only and I hope that will settle things down. Watching him …

Wednesday morning

Yesterday both started and finished with rain and it is still raining now, so I think shooting is off today.  Despite my mismanagement the tomatoes in the greenhouse have managed to produce some nice fruits and certainly enough for a salad with our fish for lunch.

Supper was also from the garden to some extent as we had figs with parma ham and a camembert that was absolutely perfect with no chalky centre.  Some hot focaccia from the oven completed meal along with the left over potato salad from lunch.  It was a sort of pick and mix type meal but the plates were clean and there was nothing left so I guess it was just what was wanted.
Today I have some bratwurst for lunch and I have a sweetheart cabbage which will stir fry and make a good accompaniment.  For super I have some salmon fish cakes and salad so nothing too complex or difficult.
It is really miserable outside with a very heavy dark sky and not a glimmer of sunshine and there is not a breath of breeze to blow the clouds aw…

Tuesday morning

Yesterday was fairly hot but this morning it is raining which the garden desperately needs and it has cleared the air to a cool 16ºC which is very pleasant.  Where I sit to type is just by the patio doors which are wide open flooding the house with lovely cool fresh air.  Yesterdays lunch was a bit on the heavy side for such a hot day so supper was a Caesar salad made with some crispy bacon and lashings of lettuce.  Today I am going for something a bit lighter with fish as the main ingredient and an accompanying salad.  I have some Bassa fillets in the freezer and they will do just fine.
The good news is that our Aldi is now open again following their mouse invasion so I am off to get some parma ham to go with the fresh figs I have rescued from the blackbirds.  We have quite a big crop this year so a few for us and a few for the birds.  The tomatoes are coming along well in the greenhouse but I do keep forgetting to water which is not a good idea as uneven watering causes problems …

Monday morning

Good morning all.  I had a bit of a ropey night last night and so ended up sleeping in this morning but that is no bad thing.  I was pleased that the nausea has somewhat subsided which makes cooking a bit easier.  Lunch was a sort of Mediterranean chicken I first fried off the chicken thighs and then gave the onions and peppers a soften in the pan then the whole lot was put in a roasting tray along with courgettes, french beans, tomatoes, thyme, lemon zest and diced potatoes and whacked in the oven for about 30 minutes. I also did some stuffed peaches as the oven was on anyway.  Today I have a pork fillet which I am intending to stuff and roast along with some potatoes and serve with runner beans.  It was very hot yesterday but today we are overcast and much cooler and more pleasant. I think I am up to running speed with the washing and ironing not that this a battle you ever win!!!!  I spent some time in the garden until it got too hot and clipped back a wisteria which was going mad…

Sunday morning

Good morning all.  Yesterday was a nice day weather wise and I was off to buy the coffee bright and early.  I met Sandy outside in the carpark where we swapped produce I took her some figs and she brought me some runner beans and some dwarf green beans.  We had a sumptuous breakfast of scrambled eggs with slices of Serrano ham all served on a doorstep of brown toast with half a tomato for garnish.  It was all washed down with a large cappuccino coffee.  Needless to say I had no interest in lunch when I got home.  I made the men the tomato tonnato which they had with a still warm crusty loaf. Photo taken from Frank Fariello's site
I didn't have my portion until about 10pm as I have been feeling very nauseated of late which is a common side effect of the medication I am on.  The men got themselves a Chinese for supper as I was feeling pretty rotten.  Hopefully, if I persevere, the side effects might die down as my body becomes accustomed to them.  It just makes meal preparation…

Saturday morning

Good morning all. This morning we have a very autumnal feel to the morning with thick mist hanging over the garden.  One of my friends who sails sent me and explanation of the mackerel sky which goes like this "Mackerel sky and mare's tails make big ships carry small sails" = big wind coming! so now we know.  However, I have to say we are a still as the grave this morning with not a breath of wind to clear the mist.
Yesterday went according to plan with lots of washing drying happily on the line and plenty of sunshine.  For lunch we had some of the wagyu burgers with salad and for supper the kedgeree.  As usual I cooked rather too much rice so it was put in the dogs bowls for their breakfast but a certain person with very big paws helped himself and now he is very sorry as there is nothing for breakfast. He seems of the opinion that the kitchen work surface is a help yourself buffet for dogs.  I am very careful to make sure things are put well back from the edge but Mik…

Friday Morning

Image
Good morning all a late start this morning as I have had a bit of a lie in this morning.  Yesterday was a busy one with loads of shopping I did both an Aldi and Tesco run.  The laundry got dry on the line even though it looked like rain on a couple of occasions.  Lunch was nice and simple a wiener schnitzel and tagliatelle with cream and mushrooms.  Is there anything that isn't improved by cream and mushrooms?  I also made the peach and amaretti dish which we had for supper with a chipolata sausage sandwich so minimal cooking involved.
This morning the sun is shining and there isn't a cloud in the sky unlike yesterday when we had a real mackerel sky which I got a quick snap of out of my bedroom window with the iPad.

I have no idea what this indicates but I can see why it is called a mackerel sky as it has the stripes just like the fish.  Hopefully it denotes good weather to come!!!!

Today I have few plans as I am not fully awake yet but I am thinking about some smoked haddo…

Thursday morning

What a lovely day I had yesterday we set of for shooting which starts at 10.30 but we were a bit early so we had a nice bacon bap each while we waited for kick off.  We had worked our way round and were finished by 12 midday just as it started to drizzle.  It was nice to meet all the people who greeted us and commented on how long it had been since we were there.  There was a whole gaggle of kids having their first shooting lessons and a special stand had been set up for them to practice on.  I was pleased with my shooting considering I haven't shot for a while I shot quite well.  This morning I know I have been shooting as my shoulder is sore not painful just a little delicate.  By the time we got home neither James nor I were in the mood for food so I made Mike a couple of slices of toast with fried eggs and we all waited until supper time to have our kebabs.  I tried to have a snooze in the afternoon but was kept awake by barking dogs so by bed time I was shattered and fell as…

Wednesday morning

Good morning all, yesterday was sunny to start with then it became heavily overcast but today we are starting with deep cloud and the wind has dropped.  Actually if it stays dry it is perfect weather for shooting.  High winds make the clays very unpredictable and therefore difficult to hit and strong sunshine makes them difficult to see so actually it is ideal for us.
Dennie came and did her stuff so the house is spotless and I played in the kitchen.  I did the dover soles for lunch with a butterbean salad and then for supper I made a sort of cross between a chicken fricassee and a ratatouille.  In between I made a large lasagne which is now in the freezer awaiting an occasion when we are 4+ for lunch.
I have managed to grab a few ripe figs before the birds get at them and as I type there is a mother blackbird demonstrating to a juvenile just how to get at the figs.  I don't really mind sharing as we usually have more than we can eat.
Lunch today will be a kebab from the s…

Tuesday morning

Good morning all, yesterday was a reasonable day I was a bit wobbly in the morning but it soon passed.  The weather was odd one minute brilliant sunshine then next dark ominous clouds and finally we did get a shower in the late afternoon.  James managed to persuade Mike to go with him on the dog walk.  There is a bench about 50 feet from the carpark where he sat and waited, but at least he got out of the house for an hour.  The bolognese sauce slowly bubbled all day in the slow cooker so supper was just a case of boiling some pasta and grating some parmesan.  I went round and had a cup of tea with my new neighbours and we sat and chatted about their plans for the house.  They are going to demolish the kitchen completely and rebuild it much bigger.  These Edwardian houses do lend themselves to alterations very well.  I actually got out into the garden and did a bit of pruning and also picked the first of the figs before the birds get to them.
Today the wonderful Dennie is coming to gi…

Monday morning

Good morning all, it looks like another glorious day with the sun shining and a gentle breeze to keep the temperature reasonable.  Yesterday I was very sleepy and I think it may be the accumulated lack of sleep couple with sleeping tablets which I don't normally take.  I slept for several hours in the afternoon and had no difficulty sleeping last night so no sleeping tablets and this morning I am up late again.  It makes quite a change not to be up before the sun and I am feeling very relaxed which is a novelty.  I am hopeful that the multiple attack with medication and other changes is having the desired effect.  The biggest change is in the mens attitude and that has probably made the biggest difference to me.
Today I plan to make a big pot of bolognese sauce and to that end I have taken a pack of mince beef and one of minced pork out of the freezer.  I use pork in lieu of veal which, as you know, is pretty difficult to get hold of.  Once all the ingredients are fried off the…

Sunday Morning

Image
Late again I seem to be making up for years of lost sleep which is no bad thing.  Yesterday was a day of excitement I went with both James and Mike to the gunsmith where I purchased a second gun which makes life much easier as now James and I can go shooting without sharing the same gun. While chatting to the gun people they said that the firearms licensing department are 5months behind in issuing licences.  No wonder they went into orbit when I told them they were a very inefficient department.  Anyway, I now have a very nice Browning 12bore tucked up in my gun cabinet.  If the weather is good on Wednesday we will go shooting and try out the new gun.  As you can see I am making every effort to get out and about.  Before we went out I had made all the preparations for lunch so it was a  quick and easy job to get it on the table.  Supper was a Chinese soup made with crab and sweetcorn - not the best I have ever made but adequate.  In the afternoon I went for a snooze and slept like the…

Saturday morning

As you can see I am up very late this morning after a reasonable nights sleep.  In fact I am not sure I am yet awake so if this is garbled mess don't be surprised.  Yesterday was a reasonable day I got a pile of shopping done and a load of washing.  I cooked lunch and dinner which I have been reluctant to do so that is some improvement.  I received phone calls from several of my friends who were checking up on me as they have been only too aware that I was falling into a hole.  Even the new neighbours commented that they had noticed that I have been loosing weight.  Those of you who are struggling with weight loss please don't be jealous believe me this is not a method I would recommend for weight loss.  It is nothing to do with eating less it is all down to the panic which must burn calories at one hell of a rate.  I haven't given up butter, cream or anything else and by rights I should be as fat as a barrel.  I hadn't realised I was loosing weight but several people…
