Yesterday was a strange day it was freezing cold with a biting wind. Not really the best of days to have a look at the bees but we went ahead any way. It was our intention to split up the hives and so breed a few extra queens but when we got into the brood boxes is was obvious that though they had survived the winter they were not yet strong enough to split up. We did however manage to find and mark both the resident queens and Terry though they should be given a feed to help them on their way. So I am mixing up 1litre of water to 1kg of sugar and putting it into the feeders for them today. I am glad to report that I managed to avoid getting stung but the Piriton made me very sleepy so after our lunch of cold beef, salad and champ I went to bed and slept for hours. This leaves me in a bit of a quandary as to whether to take the Piriton before putting the feed on and be sleepy tonight or leave it until tomorrow to put the feed on.
Today is destined to be a very busy one firstly I am off to the hair dressers and getting my locks cut which is well over due. Jane is due to come and run the hoover around and it is very necessary as Basso had a small digging incident yesterday and came in with muddy paws. I have learned to just leave it to dry and then it vacuums off easily. This evening it is dog training and I am filled with dread after last weeks debarcle. The practice I have done with Basso shows me that he know exactly what to do but who knows if he will perform tonight or just make me look stupid. My thermometer is reading 5 degrees at the moment so it looks like another cold one and I will need to wrap up warm to stand in a field for a couple of hours tonight.
I managed to give away a couple of lettuces to my neighbours yesterday but I still have dozens of them in the green house which are ready to eat. Some of the tomato plants I had on order arrived on Friday but sadly they were already dead - this needs a phone call this morning and I am going to ask for a refund. I rang immediately they arrived but the supplier was already closed for the Bank holiday weekend. This is all very disappointing so I think I will have a look at the local nursery and see if they have any suitable tomato plants for sale.
With the rain and sun we have had the grass has grown remarkably so the lawn needs cutting desperately - perhaps I need a gardening day tomorrow. No one as yet has contacted me with regard to shooting which is our usual Wednesday treat so I may be free to work in the garden for the whole day.
Anyway have a good day all and wrap up warm it is perishing........
